In 1913, the company, which specialized in canned vegetables, diversified into confectionery. It owned several factories in the Nantes region.Around 1860, Francesco Cirio built the first canned pea factory. Following rapid development, he established several fruit canning factories in southern Italy and brought abandoned lands back into cultivation to supply his factories. By 1900, at the time of his death, his company had become one of the largest in Europe.
