Description:
At the beginning of the 20th century, five tourists admire the coast of the Italian Riviera."You see, Mr. Vercasson tells me, here is tomorrow's poster by Mr. Cappiello. It is intended for the advertising campaign by Mr. Gaggini, for this earthly paradise called Portofino Kulm... Well! Look at this sketch by Cappiello. It is not for me to point out its qualities: the extraordinary reputation of the young artist, built in so few years, speaks for itself. With very discerning artistic sense, Mr. Gaggini, who knew all the nuances of Cappiello's elegant talent, wanted the young Italian to be precisely the one to celebrate one of the most marvelous panoramas of his native land. He sought him out and asked for the poster you see before you. Examine the artistry with which he has highlighted all the charms of Portofino. Now, it is up to the workers to know how to use the artwork, to render with lithographic ink all the delicacies of the pastel. You do not know all the work involved in this quest for translation. Each stone meticulously worked by Cappiello, according to values, thus takes on the design of a single color. One takes the flesh tone of the face, the hands, the pink of peach blossoms seen on the horizon, etc., another the red of a dress, a car—how should I know? All this must be combined so that the colors harmonize as in the artist's sketch, so that his aesthetic vision, which knew how to invent what would strike the public, is not disfigured.."
