Description:
In a flower-filled garden, three Graces lift an enormous tube of pills. This poster evokes a reminiscence of Botticelli's "Spring." Cappiello's three Graces do not hold hands, as in traditional depictions—one giving, another receiving, the third returning the favor—but instead generously offer the miracle remedy that will bring color to the cheeks of languid beauties. Yet the symbol of Zeus's daughters overseeing the renewal of vegetation is present in the treatment of the setting. Cappiello is not a painter of nature; this poster, along with "Porto-Fino," is the only one to depict a natural setting. The freshness of the greens in the decor, the roses, the softness of the blue—these are not the usual colors in Cappiello's palette, but here he creates a harmony of colors and forms that masterfully illustrates the youth and vibrant energy of spring, which Pink pills provide. The alliteration in P transforms the product information into a true advertising slogan. [in Cappiello. Caricatures, Posters, Paintings. Grand Palais. 1981].
