Mahatma Gandhi is wearing skates to apply wax to a parquet floor. In 1933, the date of this advertisement, Gandhi is the symbol of defenders of the untouchables and the poor. He had just finished his long salt march. With Johnson Cappiello liquid wax, the exhausting work of housekeepers responsible for maintaining parquet floors is greatly reduced. From an advertising standpoint, Gandhi's image has a definite impact because he was very popular in France at that time. Initially, this sketch was made for Sapoli wax (Cf. black and white photo).
